Swine influenza is a common virus among the pigs but is rarely found in humans. The pandemic caused in 2009 was because of the H1N1 type A influenza, which can be transmitted between two human beings.

Swine flu virus (2009 H1N1 virus) swept the whole world after first being detected in the USA in 2009. The flu caused by the H1N1 virus is a human flu. The virus is transmitted from one human to another and not from pigs. It was named so because the virus causing this originally evolved in pigs.

This disease could be transmitted to humans with intense exposure to poultry and swine. A small surveillance study performed at the University of Iowa in 2004 records the transmission of the influenza from pigs to humans. The study and collection of data suggested that those people whose work required to be in direct contact with poultry or swine be vaccinated against the flu.

The influenza is contagious and it spreads like the common seasonal flu through direct contact. When an affected person coughs or sneezes, tiny droplets containing the virus sprays into the air. Another person who comes in contact with these droplets catches the H1N1 swine flu.
