Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is the Christian festival which starts after the execution of Christian feasts of the three kings Day commonly known as Epiphany. Mardi Gras is literally a French term which refers to Fat Tuesday and this event takes place on Tuesday 9^thFebruary. From ancestral times, Mardi Gras is well known by other names also which are Shrove Tuesday and Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras is concluded by the onset of Ash Wednesday. This day is called Fat Tuesday because it weighs upon the motive of cooking and eating delicious fatty foods by families as the preparatory phase for Lent season. Likewise on this day, multiple celebratory practices are involved in order to welcome Holy season of Lent and its associated religious obligations.

The most popular custom on the day of Mardi gras is wearing multi type costumes and masks on faces. People usually throw a party on this day and dance wearing the masks. Some of the other celebrations include participating in sports activities, parades, and other social things. As Mardi Gras is also known as Shrive Tuesday, this nick name has got its own basis of existence. Shrive means “confess”, on this day, people confess before God and then starts the Holy season of Lent.  Thus, Mardi gras holds great religious values among Christians.

The central festive of Mardi Gras isn’t same everywhere instead it varies from one place to another. Some Christians consider Mardi Gras as the period starting from Epiphany and ending at Ash Wednesday whereas others celebrate Mardi Gras as the 3 day period taking place before Ash Wednesday. Fat Tuesday aka Mardi Gras is a famous festival among some major cities namely Barranquilla, Port of Spain, Trinidad, Tobago, Mexico, New-Orleans, Louisiana, Alabama, etc.   As far as U.K and Ireland is concerned, they have a unique culture of celebrating Mardi Gras, they call the period of Mardi Gras as Shrovetide which is a week falling before Ash Wednesday. Pancakes are the traditional food in Mardi Gras period along with other bread delicacies including cakes and pastries.

For the first time, the Mardi Gras Parade took place in New Orleans in 1837 when it was declared as the capital of Louisiana. Since then the festival of Mardi Gras was highly appreciated by the people of New Orleans and it became the mandatory part of the state culture by growing more than those of French and Catholic legacy.  The main slogan which is heard during Mardi Gras is “Laissez les bons temps rouler” meaning “Let the good times roll”. Although this festival isn’t celebrated throughout United States but it’s only celebrated by the French regions and of the country. It’s because of the fact that this festival landed in United States as a French catholic culture started by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville.
